A raw dollar gain doesn't tell you much on its own — $4,500 back on a $10,000 investment over ten years is a very different result than the same gain over six months. This calculator converts your investment into a total return percentage and an annualized rate, so you can compare it fairly against other investments, interest rates, or opportunities.
What's the difference between total ROI and annualized ROI? Total ROI shows the full return over the whole holding period, no matter how long that was. Annualized ROI converts that into an equivalent yearly rate, which is what lets you compare a 2-year investment against a 10-year one on equal footing.
What counts as a good ROI? It depends heavily on the type of investment and its risk. A savings account, a small business, and a high-risk startup all carry very different reasonable expectations, so ROI is most useful when compared against similar alternatives rather than a single universal benchmark.
Does this account for taxes, fees, or inflation? No — this calculates a simple gross return based on what you entered. For a fuller picture, factor in any fees, taxes, or inflation separately before comparing returns across investments.
