Staff Writer, Playbook
Turn founder conversations into the practical guides and strategies that make up The Playbook.
About the Role
At Into The Margins, we’re interested in what actually happens when someone decides to build a business.
The Playbook turns those experiences into practical, useful content that entrepreneurs can apply to their own businesses.
We’re looking for a Staff Writer, Playbook to help us turn founder conversations, interviews, research, and real-world experiences into thoughtful guides, strategies, and actionable insights.
This isn’t a role for someone who simply wants to summarize what other people have already written.
We’re looking for a writer who can listen, investigate, understand, and explain.
You’ll work closely with founders and our editorial team to uncover useful lessons and turn them into stories that help entrepreneurs make better decisions.
What You’ll Do
You’ll help create the articles, guides, and resources that make up The Playbook.
- Turn founder interviews and conversations into practical articles.
- Research business topics and identify useful insights for entrepreneurs.
- Develop article ideas based on real problems business owners face.
- Interview founders, operators, and subject-matter experts.
- Write actionable guides, strategies, explainers, and how-to content.
- Find the useful lessons hidden inside personal experiences.
- Turn complex business ideas into clear, approachable writing.
- Collaborate with editors and other members of the content team.
- Revise and improve articles based on editorial feedback.
- Research supporting statistics, examples, and sources.
- Maintain accuracy while keeping articles engaging and readable.
- Help identify opportunities to update and improve existing Playbook content.
Write for the Person Building the Business
The Playbook isn’t designed to impress people with complicated language or business jargon.
It’s designed to help someone who is actually trying to build something.
That might be a founder figuring out how to price a product, a small business owner trying to hire their first employee, or an entrepreneur trying to understand why their marketing isn’t working.
The reader should finish an article thinking:
“I know what to do next.”
That’s the standard we’re aiming for.
What We’re Looking For
We’re looking for a strong writer with experience producing useful, well-researched editorial content.
You should have:
- Professional writing experience.
- Excellent grammar, structure, and editorial judgment.
- Experience writing about business, entrepreneurship, marketing, technology, or related topics.
- Strong research skills.
- Experience conducting interviews.
- The ability to explain complicated ideas simply.
- Strong attention to detail and factual accuracy.
- The ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
- Comfort working through multiple rounds of editing.
Experience writing for digital publications, business websites, newsletters, or editorial platforms is a strong plus.
The Kind of Writer We’re Looking For
We’re less interested in someone who simply writes a lot and more interested in someone who knows what is worth writing about.
You should be:
- Naturally curious.
- Comfortable asking follow-up questions.
- Interested in how businesses actually work.
- Skeptical of easy answers.
- Good at finding the useful detail inside a conversation.
- Comfortable doing research before forming an opinion.
- Able to write clearly without unnecessary jargon.
- Comfortable taking editorial feedback.
- Willing to rewrite when the story isn’t working yet.
- Focused on helping the reader rather than showing off the writer.
You should also be comfortable talking to people.
Some of the best material for The Playbook will come from conversations with people who have actually done the work.
Founder Interviews
A significant part of this role will involve turning founder conversations into useful editorial content.
That means going beyond:
“Tell me about your business.”
You’ll need to ask questions that uncover the decisions behind the outcome.
What went wrong?
What did they try first?
What would they do differently?
What did they learn the hard way?
What would they tell someone facing the same problem?
Those answers become the foundation for practical Playbook content.
Research Matters
Good editorial content requires more than a strong opinion.
You’ll research topics, verify claims, find supporting evidence, and look for multiple perspectives before publishing.
You’ll be expected to:
- Verify important facts.
- Use credible sources.
- Distinguish opinion from evidence.
- Find original sources whenever possible.
- Keep research organized.
- Identify outdated or misleading information.
- Update existing articles when new information changes the story.
We want our readers to trust what they find on Into The Margins.
That trust starts with the quality of the research.
SEO & Digital Publishing
You don’t need to be an SEO specialist, but you should understand how people discover content online.
You’ll work with our marketing and content teams to create articles that are useful to readers and discoverable through search.
Experience with the following is helpful:
- Keyword research.
- Search intent.
- On-page SEO.
- Content structure.
- Internal linking.
- Search Console and analytics.
- Content optimization.
- Updating existing content.
The goal isn’t to write for search engines.
The goal is to create something genuinely useful that deserves to rank.
What Success Looks Like
In this role, success means creating Playbook content that people actually use.
You’ll help us:
- Publish consistently useful articles.
- Build a growing library of practical business resources.
- Turn founder experiences into actionable lessons.
- Increase readership of The Playbook.
- Develop repeatable editorial formats.
- Improve the quality and depth of our existing content.
- Build trust with entrepreneurs and business owners.
The best measure isn’t simply how many words we publish.
It’s whether the content helps someone make a better decision.
Remote Work
This is a Remote full-time position.
You’ll work closely with our editorial and content teams while managing your own schedule and writing workflow.
You’ll need to be comfortable communicating remotely, meeting deadlines, participating in editorial discussions, and taking ownership of assignments from idea through publication.
Why Into The Margins?
We’re building a publication around the stories and lessons that often get left out of traditional business media.
The founder who nearly ran out of money.
The entrepreneur who had to completely change direction.
The small business owner who figured out a better way to serve customers.
The decision that looked insignificant at the time but changed everything.
Those experiences contain useful information.
The Playbook exists to turn that information into something another entrepreneur can use.
As Staff Writer, you’ll help us find those stories, understand them, and turn them into practical resources for people building businesses of their own.
You’ll work with a small team, have meaningful editorial ownership, and help shape the voice and direction of The Playbook.
